La arquitectura neoclásica en Portugal, debido a que surgió en una época muy convulsa, se desarrolló siguiendo un camino propio, enfrentando problemas de orden artísticos y económicos que ocasionaron una periodización diferente de la del resto de Europa, donde surgió entre 1750 y 1760.

The new taste for antique simplicity represented a general reaction to the excesses of the Rococo style.
Neoclassical architecture became widespread as a symbol of wealth and power in Germany, mostly in what was then Prussia. Karl Friedrich Schinkel built many prominent buildings in this style, including the Altes Museum in Berlin.
