Nicholas II (Nikolai II Alexandrovich Romanov; 18 May [O.S. 6 May] 1868 – 17 July 1918), known in the Russian Orthodox Church as Saint Nicholas the Passion-Bearer, was the last Emperor of Russia, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Finland, ruling from 1 November 1894 until his abdication on 15 March 1917.
However, a decree by Nicholas II in 1896 reinstated the white, blue, and red tricolour as the Russian national flag. In 1917, with the establishment of the Russian SFSR after the October Revolution , the Bolsheviks banned the traditional Russian tricolour, though it continued to be flown by the White Movement during the Russian Civil War .
