Nicolas of Lorraine, Duke of Mercœur (16 October 1524 – 23 January 1577), was the second son of Antoine, Duke of Lorraine, and Renée de Bourbon. [1] Life. He was originally destined for an ecclesiastical career, being made bishop of Metz in 1543 and of Verdun in 1544.

Juni 1577), auch Nicolas de Lorraine-Mercœur oder kurz Nicolas de Mercœur genannt, war zunächst Bischof von Verdun (1544 bis 1547) und Metz (1543 bis 1548), dann Graf von Vaudémont (1548 bis 1577), Herr von Mercœur (1563 bis 1569) und schließlich Herzog von Mercœur (1569 bis 1577).
Personal life. Early years. Born in Nomeny in the Duchy of Bar, Louise was the third daughter and youngest child born to Nicholas of Lorraine, Duke of Mercœur, and his first wife, Countess Margaret of Egmont (1517–1554). [1] . She was the only surviving child of her parents; her older siblings, two sisters and one brother, died in infancy.
