They were renting a cliff-top villa half a mile away at North Foreland which had a set of steps cut into the chalk that led down to a private beach. The villa was called St Cuby and is believed to be the inspiration for Trafalgar Lodge, where the book’s hero, Richard Hannay, meets the villainous Mr Appleton.

The boundaries of the Conservation Area are formed by the suburban edge of the modern village to the north beyond The Green, the River Loddon and grounds to Breach Farmhouse in the east, the extensive planted grounds of North Foreland Lodge (now Sherfield School) in the south, and open fields behind The Green perimeter at Court Farm to the west.
Following the death of Lord Desborough, Taplow Court is put up for sale. In 1946 the school moves to Broadstairs on the Isle of Thanet in Kent where it takes up residence in buildings vacated during the war by another independent school, North Foreland Lodge.
