Hace 1 día · Last week I shared the story of Oliver Cromwell, a formerly enslaved man in the painting by German artist, Emmanuel Leutze, that depicted General George Washington crossing the Delaware River in 1772. Cromwell was not the only enslaved man in the boat with Cromwell and General Washington. The other man’s name was Prince Whipple.

While in Huntingdon, I visited an exhibition marking the 375th anniversary of the visitation of one of the most sinister figures in 17th century history, the infamous and self-styled ‘Witchfinder General’ Matthew Hopkins.
Hace 7 horas · The “prettie little town” did not survive the occupation of Scotland by Oliver Cromwell and his New Model Army. In the 1650s they constructed a fort on the site at South Beach and today there are no remains of either town or fort to be seen.
Hace 5 días · John Thurloe was an English secretary of state during Oliver Cromwell’s Protectorate. His voluminous correspondence provides one of the chief historical sources for the Cromwellian era. Thurloe entered politics as secretary to the Parliamentary leader Oliver St. John and in March 1652 was appointed.
