Cromwell defeated Charles II at the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651, and Charles fled to mainland Europe. Cromwell became Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland.

After his death and burial, Oliver Cromwell's body was dug up and he was put on trial posthumously. He was convicted and he was "executed" despite already being dead. Eventually, he was beheaded and his head was put on a pike and displayed outside Westminster Abbey where it remained for decades.
