Actor y músico estadounidense. Nació el 27 de diciembre de 1906 en Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania, Estados Unidos. Criado en una famila judío ortodoxa de origen Ruso. Se trasladó a Nueva York en 1922, tras la muerte de su padre. Estudió con Zygmunt Stojowski, un pedagogo del piano bien establecido.
