Ossian Sweet (/ˈɒʃən/ OSH-ən; October 30, 1895 – March 20, 1960) was an African-American physician in Detroit, Michigan. He is known for being charged with murder in 1925 after he and his friends used armed self-defense against a hostile white mob protesting after Sweet moved into their neighborhood.

But Dr. Sweet was African American in the 1920s, and his life tells the story of race struggles in this country—then and now.
In 1925, Dr. Ossian Sweet, a prominent African American physician, purchased a home in an all-white Detroit neighborhood. The result was a mob scene, a murder charge, and a landmark lawsuit that helped define Detroit race relations. Born in 1895 in Orlando, Florida to tenant farmers, Sweet earned a medical degree from Howard University.

This trial and a re-trial of Ossian Sweet’s younger brother Henry exposed racial tensions in northern cities in the years following the Great Migration.
The Sweet case is a stark example of how racism and hatred constricts and destroys Black families and communities. Moreover, it is a reminder of how far the police’s and the justice system’s reinforcement of racism can reach.
