Im Jahr 1710 verlieh August der Starke der ungenutzten Festungsanlage neuen Glanz ‒ und das Wort »Zwinger« bekam eine ganz neue Bedeutung. Für einige Hundert italienische Orangenbäume ließ er dort von seinem Bauleiter Pöppelmann eine der schönsten Orangerien Deutschlands erbauen.
