Years of service. 1531–1556. Rank. Lord High Admiral of Scotland. Patrick Hepburn, 3rd Earl of Bothwell (1512 – September 1556) was the son of Adam Hepburn, Lord Hailes, who died at the Battle of Flodden the year after Patrick's birth. Hepburn was known as the Fair Earl.

Bothwell was the son of Patrick Hepburn, 3rd Earl of Bothwell, whom he succeeded as earl in 1556. Although he was probably acting in an advisory capacity to Mary almost from the moment of her return in Scotland , their liaison does not seem to have begun until 1566, after the birth of her son, the future James VI of Scotland .
