Lady Jean Hepburn was born at Crichton Castle, Midlothian, Scotland, the daughter of Patrick Hepburn, 3rd Earl of Bothwell and Lady Agnes Sinclair. Her parents obtained a divorce sometime before 16 October 1543, and Jean's mother was henceforth styled Lady Morham until her death in 1572.
The lordship was bestowed in 1487 on Patrick Hepburn, 3rd Lord Hailes, 1st Earl of Bothwell. When he resigned in 1491 the title passed to "Bell-the-Cat", Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus. The title ultimately passed to the Earls of Home. The castle is a fine example of Gothic architecture.

In 1567 he helped hold Dunbar Castle for his kinsman James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell. Patrick Hepburn of Waughton and Lufness was retoured heir to his father on 3 April 1605. Hepburn sold the lands of Brethertoun [Brotherton] to George Keith, 5th Earl Marischal, and his wife Margaret Ogilvie for £20,500 Scots on 8 December 1613.
They had six sons and three daughters. His grandson Patrick (who would become the first Earl of Bothwell), succeeded him as Lord of Hailes, as his eldest son Adam predeceased him. His son John established Saint Leonards College in Saint Andrews. His daughter, Helen Hepburn, married John Somerville, 3rd Lord Somerville, and had issue. See also
