Ruthven ( / ˈrɪvən /, Gaelic: Ruadhainn ), Aberdeenshire is a village in Scotland near Huntly (to the south east), and Keith (to the north west). It is traditionally pronounced "Riven".
John Ruthven byl druhým synem Williama Ruthvena, 1. hrabě z Gowrie, a jeho manželky Dorothea Stewart. Jeho bratr James, 2. hrabě, zemřel v roce 1586, proto John následoval svého bratra jako hrabě z Gowrie, když byl ještě dítě. Rodina Ruthvenů měla v minulosti zradu.
