Patrick Sarsfield, 1st Earl of Lucan (c. 1655 – 21 August 1693) was an Irish soldier and Jacobite. Killed at Landen in 1693 while serving in the French army , he is now best remembered as an Irish patriot and military hero.

Sarsfield, Patrick (d. 1693), soldier, lst earl of Lucan , was the second son, and youngest of five children, of Patrick Sarsfield and his wife Anne, daughter of Rory O'More (qv), a leader of the 1641 rebellion. The Sarsfields were an Old English family who had estates at Lucan, Co. Dublin, and Tully, Co. Kildare.
Patrick Sarsfield bore a commission in the English Life Guards; he fought under Monmouth on the Continent, and against him at Sedgemoor, where he was severely wounded. He retired with James II. to France, and accompanied him to Ireland in March 1689, ranking as a brigadier-general.
Patrick Sarsfield is thought to have been born on his family estate near Lucan in County Kildare in, or around 1650. His father, also Patrick, was of Anglo-Norman descent and his mother, Anne, was a daughter of the great Gaelic chieftain, Rory O’ Moore, who helped organize the rebellion of 1641.
