La música fue compuesta en 1863 por Myjaylo Verbitski, compositor y sacerdote greco-católico. La letra fue escrita por Pavló Chubinski que vivía en Kiev. La letra es similar a las líricas de los himnos de Polonia, Serbia, e Israel. En 1917, el himno fue adoptado en la República Popular Ucraniana.
