Philippe-Charles, Duke of Anjou (5 August 1667 – 10 July 1671) was the fifth child and second son of King Louis XIV of France and Maria Theresa of Spain, and as such was a fils de France.
Philippe Charles d'Orléans, petit-fils de France, Duke of Valois (16 July 1664 – 8 December 1666) was a French prince and Grandson of France. He was styled Duke of Valois at the time of his birth. He was a short lived nephew of Louis XIV .

On account of the prestige of his birth, cadet branches of the royal family saw in him a highly desirable match for their daughters. In 1712, Berry's eldest brother, Louis, Duke of Burgundy, Dauphin of France, and the latter's elder son, Louis, Duke of Brittany died. It was foreseeable that Berry would serve as Regent for his brother's only surviving son, Louis, Duke of Anjou. But, on 5 May 1714, he died from internal injuries sustained in a hunting accident.
The Duke and the Duchess of Berry had three children, none of whom survived infancy. N'ayant pas eu d'enfant de ses deux mariages avec Marie-Louise d'Orléans (1679) et Marie-Anne de Bavière Neubourg (1690), il désigne comme son successeur Philippe d'Anjou (futur Philippe V), petit-fils de Louis XIV, ce qui provoque la guerre de la Succession d'Espagne.
Like his cousin, Louis Jean Marie de Bourbon, Duke of Penthièvre, Louis Charles was popular as a result of his charitable donations. In 1773 he offered to sell the dukedom of Aumale, countship of Eu and the estate of Anet to Louis XV for 12 million livres .
