The biggest sensation of the Grand Pas de deux was, of course, the famous 32 fouettés en tournant, which Pierina Legnani was the first ballerina to perform on the Russian stage. Legnani began dancing at the age of 7 and after a year of private teaching, she was accepted into “La Scala, where she trained for ten years.
The ballet was another opportunity for Petipa to showcase the great talent of the Italian dancers through one of his favourite ballerinas Pierina Legnani, who created the title role. Raymonda was premièred on the 19th January [O.S. 7th January] 1898 and was a huge success, with most of the praise going towards Legnani’s performance, Petipa’s choreography and Glazunov’s score.

She performed with such grace and discipline, the bar was quickly set in the minds of all who saw her. It's no surprise that every ballerina to dance the part of Odette/Odile after Legnani was judged against her performance.
