When they returned in force starting with Middle Platonism in the 1st century CE, it was in as a synthetic tradition: Aristotle was still regarded as Plato's greatest student, and the two of them were regarded as the two greatest authorities on the ancient Greek tradition, which was thought to teach, more or less, a unitary wisdom.

This led him to questions of epistemology on what knowledge is and how it is acquired. Socrates had several other students who also founded schools of philosophy.
