Das Ost in Ostfriesland bezieht sich darauf, dass es im östlichen Teil des alten Friesland liegt – im Gegensatz zum Westfriesland genannten Teil (der Provinz Friesland und der nordholländischen Region West-Friesland in den Niederlanden).
