Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Francis Albert Augustus Charles Emmanuel; 26 August 1819 – 14 December 1861) was the consort of Queen Victoria from their marriage on 10 February 1840 until his death in 1861. Albert was born in the Saxon duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld to a family connected to many of Europe's ruling monarchs.
In 1826 his title changed from Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld to Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, when his brother Duke Ernst I made a territorial exchange with other members of the family. Ferdinand's nephews and nieces included Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and her husband Prince Albert , as well as Empress Carlota of Mexico and her brother King Leopold II of Belgium .

At age 16, Victoria met her future husband, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who also happened to be her first cousin. After four years of friendship and flirtation, Queen Victoria proposed to her prince (actually, she had no choice—according to tradition, a man couldn’t propose to the queen). The smitten couple married in 1840.
Obwohl für das heutige deutsche Haus das britische Haus Saxe-Coburg and Gotha die Stammlinie ist, besitzt das deutsche Haus damit keinerlei britische Titel und Würden. Gemäß dem Titles Deprivation Act haben die männlichen Erben des Hauses das Recht, die britische Krone um ihre Wiedereinsetzung in diese Titel zu bitten, doch haben sie davon bisher keinen Gebrauch gemacht.
