On March 14, 1845, Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, Germany, purchased 1,265 acres for $1,112. Thus, the “City of a Prince” was born. Seven days later, on Good Friday, Prince Carl led the first settlers into New Braunfels, named after his ancestral German home. This city’s story takes flight on the dreams of German emigrants.
March 18 1845. Prince Carl crossed the Guadalupe River at the ford of the military road, El Camino Real, which stretched from Nacogdoches to San Antonio. March 21 1845. On Good Friday, emigrant wagons forded the river at the same spot as Prince Carl, marking the founding of New Braunfels. April 28 1845.

The Adelsverein was able to recruit many countrymen who desired a new life in Texas. The first three ships sailed in October 1844, with one trunk per family (and you thought our airline bag fees were tough!).
