Prince Carl (or Charles) of Denmark was also the nephew of the Princess of Wales, so they were cousins. He was elected king of Norway by the Norwegian parliament on 18 November 1905 and took the name King Haakon VII.

The young man is second in line to the Danish throne and shares a generation with most of the future queens of continental Europe .
