He was the third son of the then Prince Frederick of Hesse, and his wife Princess Anna of Prussia. The elder Frederick, a Danish military officer, had been one (and perhaps the foremost) of the candidates of Christian VIII of Denmark to succeed to the Danish throne in the 1840s if the latter's male line died out, but renounced his rights in 1851 in favor of his sister, Louise of Hesse.

Alexandra. Queen of Great Britain from 1901. Daughter of Christian IX and Louise of Hesse-Kassel. Married in 1863 to Edward (VII), Prince of Wales. They had six children of whom the youngest died only a few hours after its birth and the eldest, Prince Albert Victor, died from influenza aged 28.
