He was the son of Count Wilhelm Moritz of Solms-Braunfels and his wife Princess Magdalene Sophie of Hesse-Homburg , a daughter of William Christoph, Landgrave of Hesse-Homburg, and his first wife Princess Sophia Eleonore of Hesse-Darmstadt.
