Prince Frederick William of Great Britain (13 May 1750 – 29 December 1765) was a grandchild of King George II and the youngest brother of King George III. He was the youngest son of Frederick, Prince of Wales and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. He died at the young age of 15. He was buried at Westminster Abbey, London.

Frederick, Prince of Wales, was a great royal collector. Estranged from his parents, he created a court of his own, and was keen to patronise contemporary artists and craftsmen.

Conversation pieces show the Prince, who was the eldest son of George II, as an affectionate brother (no. 15), a clubbable friend (nos. 16 and 17) and a popular man about town (no. 18). The form perhaps also expressed Britain’s new ‘contractual’ relationship between monarch and subject.
