Prince Alfred of Great Britain (22 September 1780 – 20 August 1782) was the fourteenth child and ninth and youngest son of King George III and his queen consort, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. At that time, smallpox was a dreaded disease and many princes and princesses were becoming infected around Europe.
3 The United Kingdom was formed on January 1, 1801, with the union of Great Britain and Ireland. After 1801 George III was styled "King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland." 4 Oliver and Richard Cromwell served as lords protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland during the republican Commonwealth.
The Act of Union in 1800 created the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland – but this has been referred to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland since the Irish Free State was formed in 1922 (later the Republic of Ireland). Some sources list monarchs separately from 1603-1707 and from 1707-present day.
