Consort of Frederick III, German Emperor, King of Prussia; daughter of Queen Victoria Victoria married Prince Frederick William of Prussia in 1858. The Queen and Prince Albert hoped that Victoria's marriage to the future King of Prussia would cement close ties between London and Berlin, and possibly lead to the emergence of a unified and liberal Germany.
Frederick VI of Nuremberg was officially recognized as Margrave and Prince-elector Frederick I of Brandenburg at the Council of Constance in 1415. When Duke of Prussia Albert Frederick died in 1618 without having had a son, his son-in-law John Sigismund, at the time the prince-elector of the Margraviate of Brandenburg, inherited the Duchy of Prussia.
Prince Frederick William of Prussia (1831-88), known affectionately as ‘Fritz’, was the only son of William I, King of Prussia, Emperor of Germany, and Augusta, daughter of Charles Frederick, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. In 1858 he married Victoria, Princess Royal, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

He ruled as an enlightened despot and instituted numerous economic, civil, and social reforms.

He was often beaten and humiliated by his father for his keen interest in arts and music, as his father considered these interests effeminate. In 1730, Frederick tried to escape his abusive father.
