Christian IX was born on 8 April 1818 at the residence of his maternal grandparents, Gottorf Castle, near the town of Schleswig in the Duchy of Schleswig. Born as a prince of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck, he was the fourth son of Friedrich Wilhelm, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck, and Princess Louise Caroline of Hesse-Kassel.

Prince Adolf of Schaumburg-Lippe (German: Adolf Wilhelm Viktor; 20 July 1859 – 9 July 1916) was a German prince of the House of Schaumburg-Lippe and a Prussian General of the Cavalry. He was regent of the Principality of Lippe from 1895 to 1897 due to the incapacity of his distant relative Alexander, Prince of Lippe .
He was the brother of Adolf II, Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe, Princes Friedrich Christian and Stephan, the four sons of Georg, Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe.
