Gorm the Old (Danish: Gorm den Gamle; Old Norse: Gormr gamli; Latin: Gormus Senex), also called Gorm the Languid (Danish: Gorm Løge, Gorm den Dvaske), was ruler of Denmark, reigning from c. 936 to his death c. 958 or a few years later. He ruled from Jelling, and made the oldest of the Jelling stones in honour of his wife Thyra.

The history of the Danish Monarchy. The Danish Monarchy can be traced back to Gorm the Old (d. 958). The monarchy was originally elective, but in practice the choice was normally limited to the eldest son of the reigning monarch or closely related.
Gorm the Old was a Danish king who ruled from his seat in Jelling from c.936 until his death c.958. He was the father of Harald Bluetooth, who is considered by most to have been the first king who ruled all of Denmark. Gorm raised a runestone at Jelling to commemorate his wife, Queen Thyra. It describes her as “Denmark’s adornment”.
The Danish monarchy today. The Royal Family plays an important symbolic role, both at home and abroad. In Denmark, they promote good causes and welcome foreign heads of state at glittering state dinners. They visit Greenland and the Faroe Islands, which are part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
