Early life[edit] Prince Ludwig was born at Nymphenburg Palace, Munich, Kingdom of Bavaria. He was the eldest son of Prince Franz of Bavaria, the third son of King Ludwig III, and his wife Princess Isabella Antonie of Cro.

He lost his throne at the end of the First World War, as the German Empire was dissolved and the Weimar Republic created, with all the German state monarchies abolished in the process.
