Prince Luitpold of Bavaria, born in 1951 in Leutstetten Castle, not far from Lake Starnberg, is the great-grandson of the last Bavarian King Ludwig III. At the age of 25, Prince Luitpold took over the management of the traditional brewery at Schloss Kaltenberg.

Prince Luitpold was born at Schloß Leutstetten near Starnberg, in Bavaria. He is the only surviving child of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (1913–2008) and his wife Princess Irmingard of Bavaria (1923–2010). Marriage. On 25 June 1979 Prince Luitpold married Katrin Beatrix Wiegand, the daughter of Gerd Wiegand and his wife Ellen Schumacher.

He is a member of the Wittelsbach family, a prominent European dynasty that ruled Bavaria without interruption from 1180 until 1918, when, upon the defeat of the German Empire in World War I, all German monarchies were abolished.
The “reigning Prince” Luitpold then continued in office even after Ludwig's tragic death, because Ludwig's younger brother, King Otto I of Bavaria, was also deemed unfit to govern. Even today, the era of the Prince Regent's reign is considered as “the good old days” in Bavaria.
