On April 16, 1882, in Altenburg, Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, now in the German state of Thuringia, Georg married Princess Marie Anna of Saxe-Altenburg, who was eighteen years younger than him. Born on March 14, 1864, Marie Anna was the eldest child of Prince Moritz of Saxe-Altenburg and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Meiningen .
Ernst II Bernhard Georg Johann Karl Frederick Peter Albert, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg (b. Altenburg, 31 August 1871 - d. Schloß Fröhliche Wiederkunft, 22 March 1955), was the last reigning duke of Saxe-Altenburg. He was the fourth child but only son of Prince Moritz the youngest son of Georg, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg and Augusta of Saxe-Meiningen.
Princess Elisabeth, as she was usually known, was the second child of Prince Moritz of Saxe-Altenburg (1829–1907) and his wife, Princess Augusta of Saxe-Meiningen (1843–1919). During her youth she made several trips around Europe visiting her relatives.

Family. He was the fourth but second surviving son of Frederick, Duke of Saxe-Hildburghausen (of Saxe-Altenburg from 1826) and Duchess Charlotte Georgine of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. He fought in the Austrian ranks against Napoleonic France in the 1813–1814 war. Georg succeeded his brother Joseph as Duke of Saxe-Altenburg when he abdicated, in 1848.
