He was a grandson of Christian IX of Denmark and the father of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He was a prince of Greece and Denmark, both by virtue of his patrilineal descent. A career soldier, Prince Andrew began military training at an early age, and was commissioned as an officer in the Greek army.
The bottom-left quarter had five vertical black and white stripes, representing the House of Mountbatten, Philip's maternal family, and the bottom-right quarter bore a heraldic representation of Edinburgh Castle, taken from the city's coat of arms, to symbolise his title as Duke of Edinburgh.
In 1984 the battalion was presented with new Queen's and Regimental Colours by its Colonel-in-Chief, the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. That December it joined UNFICYP in Cyprus, returning home again in June 1985.
