He was appointed a Royal Knight of the Order of the Garter in 1794 and inherited the title of Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh on the death of his father in 1805 - however, neither event prompted a change in his royal status.

In 1981, the township of Gloucester became a city, and in 2001, and it was one of the 11 municipalities amalgamated as part of the City of Ottawa.
