This was confirmed by the Treaty of Constantinople , whereby Greece became a new independent kingdom under the protection of the Great Powers (the United Kingdom , France and the Russian Empire ).

Small arches of white marble open from the side walls of the transepts into the aisles, and round these are painted arabesque panels.
