Frederica was born on 18 April 1917 in Blankenburg am Harz, Duchy of Brunswick, German Empire. She was the only daughter of Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick, and Princess Viktoria Luise of Prussia. As a descendant of Queen Victoria, she was, at birth, 34th in the line of succession to the British throne.
Augustus married Princess Frederica Sophia Charlotte Alexandrina at Neustrelitz, May 29, 1815, and in London, August 29, 1815. Princess Frederica was the widow of (1) Prince Frederick Louis Charles of Prussia, and (2) Prince Frederick William of Solms-Braunfels, and 3rd daughter of Charles Louis Frederick, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz; she died on June 29, 1841.
Frederica was born in the Altes Palais of Hanover as the fifth daughter of Charles II, Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and Princess Friederike of Hesse-Darmstadt. Her father assumed the title of Grand Duke of Mecklenburg on 18 June 1815.

Frederica and Paul wedded on January 9, 1938 at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens. As her husband was heir presumptive to his childless elder brother, King George II, Frederica became Hereditary Princess of Greece.
