Frederica was born in the Altes Palais of Hanover as the fifth daughter of Charles II, Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and Princess Friederike of Hesse-Darmstadt. Her father assumed the title of Grand Duke of Mecklenburg on 18 June 1815.

Frederica was born on 18 April 1917 in Blankenburg am Harz, Duchy of Brunswick, German Empire. She was the only daughter of Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick, and Princess Viktoria Luise of Prussia. As a descendant of Queen Victoria, she was, at birth, 34th in the line of succession to the British throne.
In the United Kingdom, she held the title of Princess with the style Her Highness as a male line great-granddaughter of King George III. [1] In 1866 Marie's father was deposed as king of Hanover. Marie and her mother remained in Hanover for over a year, residing at Schloss Marienburg, until they went into exile in Austria in July 1867. [2]
