She died on October 28, 1888, aged 57, in Pyrmont, Principality of Waldeck and Pyrmont, now in the German state of Lower Saxony. She was buried at the Princely Cemetery at Schloss Rhoden (link in German) in Rhoden, Principality of Waldeck-Pyrmont, now in the German state of Hesse.
Helena was born at Arolsen, Waldeck and Pyrmont the third child and first and only daughter of Friedrich, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont (1865–1946), and his wife, Princess Bathildis of Schaumburg-Lippe (1873–1962), daughter of Wilhelm Karl August, Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe. She was a first cousin of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.

Through her son Charles Edward, Helena is the great-grandmother of Carl XVI Gustav, the current King of Sweden. Adelheid Emma Wilhelmina Theresia, Princess of Waldeck and Pyrmont, daughter of Prince Georg Viktor of Waldeck and Pyrmont and Princess Helena of Nassau, was born in Arolsen on 2 August 1858. Queen Emma, 1929. On 7 January 1879 she married King Willem III of the Netherlands. Their daughter Wilhelmina was born on 31 August 1880.
