On 25 October 1844 at Arolsen, Adolf was married to his cousin, Princess Hermine of Waldeck and Pyrmont (1827–1910), a daughter of George II, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont. His mother was a sister of her father. The couple had eight children:

Herminia de Waldeck-Pyrmont (en alemán, Hermine zu Waldeck und Pyrmont; Arolsen, 29 de septiembre de 1827 - Bückeburg, 16 de febrero de 1910) fue una princesa alemana. Era la segunda hija del príncipe Jorge II de Waldeck-Pyrmont y de su esposa, la princesa Emma de Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym.

She was an aunt of Emma of Waldeck and Pyrmont, who became Queen of the Netherlands. On 25 October 1844, Hermine married her first cousin Adolf I, Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe.
