In Gotha on 31 July 1817 Louise married her kinsman Ernst I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld.

She was born in Altenburg, Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, now in the German state of Thuringia, on August 11, 1873, the youngest child of Prince Moritz of Saxe-Altenburg and Princess Auguste of Saxe-Meiningen. Luise Charlotte had four older siblings:

Her mother never recovered from the childbirth and died just 11 days later on 4 January 1801.
