Yet Franz Ferdinand’s devotion to his wife and children – Princess Sophie of Hohenberg (1901-1990), Maximilian, Duke of Hohenberg (1902-1962), and Prince Ernst of Hohenberg (1904-1954) – was irreproachable. Even his bitterest enemies admired his family life. The public sphere was another story.
9 de ene. de 2024 · Princess Sophie was born on 24 July 1901 at Konopiště chateau, in the Czech Republic, fifty kilometres south-east of Prague. This chateau, situated in Bohemia, was the favourite home of the Archduke and his wife. On 29 September 1902, the couple's first son, Maximilian, was born. A second son, Ernst, followed on 17 May 1904.

Sophie tried to negotiate her brothers’ release from Dachau with Heinrich Himmler, and so she travelled to the Gestapo headquarters in Berlin, all alone. She repeatedly returned there, hoping to meet with Himmler. Soon her home in Prague and her husband’s lands were swallowed up in Hitler’s Empire.
Georg, Duke von Hohenberg (25 April 1929 at Artstetten Castle – 25 July 2019), married on 4 July 1960 in Vienna, Princess Eleonore of Auersperg-Breunner (12 September 1928 in Goldegg – 15 February 2021), daughter of Karl Alain, Prince of Auersperg-Breunner and Countess Marie Henriette von Meran. They have three children.

After the wedding, Emperor Franz Joseph did grant Sophie the title of Princess of Hohenberg -- a title in Austrian nobility, though a very minor one. Sophie's daughter Sophie was born in 1901. Maximillian was born in 1902, Ernst in 1904. Franz, Sophie and their children enjoyed a happy home life. Public life was not as comfortable.
