20 de abr. de 2024 · Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, later Duchess of Kent and Strathearn, was a German princess and the mother of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. As the widow of Charles, Prince of Leiningen (1763–1814), from 1814 she served as regent of the Principality during the minority of her son from her first marriage, Carl, until her second wedding in 1818.
In Ebersdorf on 13 June 1777, Augusta married Francis, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, who previously acquired the Artemisia painting for four times the original price because he was deeply in love with Augusta, but he was already obliged to marry his relative Princess Sophie of Saxe-Hildburghausen. This portrait of Antoinette of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld is a copy after the pastel portrait by J.H. Schroeder of c.1795 which forms part of a set of Francis Anthony, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, his Duchess and his children, at Schloss Callenburg, Coburg (exh. Coburg 1997, no. 1-19, repr.). Herbert Luther Smith was commissioned to make copies after the pastels for Queen Victoria.
Mary Louise Victoria ( Marie Luise Viktoria) was born in Coburg on 17 August 1786 in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. She was the fourth daughter and seventh child of Franz Frederick Anton, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, and Countess Augusta of Reuss-Ebersdorf. She had a rough childhood growing up with her brothers and sisters.
