Thyra Amelie Caroline Charlotte Anne of Schleswig-Holstein was born on September 29, 1853 at the Yellow Palace in Copenhagen, Denmark. She was the third and youngest daughter and the fifth child of the future King Christian IX—founder of the Royal Danish Glücksburg Dynasty and was dubbed the “Father-in-law of Europe”—and his wife, the future Queen Louise of Denmark.
Seated behind her mother is Princess Thyra of Denmark (1853-1933). Alexandra, Princess of Wales (1844-1925), later Queen Alexandra, stands with her back to the viewer on the right of the photograph. She faces the viewer and rests her left hand on her mother's left shoulder.

Princess Thyra of Denmark (Thyra Louise Caroline Amalie Augusta Elisabeth; 14 March 1880 – 2 November 1945) was a member of the Danish royal family. She was the sixth child and third daughter of King Frederik VIII and Queen Louise of Denmark, and was also the younger sister of King Christian X of Denmark and King Haakon VII of Norway.
