Ralph Montagu, 1st Duke of Montagu (24 December 1638 – 9 March 1709) was an English courtier, diplomat, politician and peer. [1] Background. Under Queen Anne, he secured promotion to the highest rank in the peerage by a family alliance with the Duke of Marlborough ( John Churchill II ). He died of pleurisy on 9 Mar. 1709, and was buried at Warkton.
