On 10 January 1921, he became a Kapitänleutnant (lieutenant) in the new German navy ( Vorläufige Reichsmarine ). Dönitz commanded torpedo boats, becoming a Korvettenkapitän (lieutenant-commander) on 1 November 1928.

He became a naval cadet at Kiel, Germany's primary naval base. Many of Heydrich's fellow cadets falsely regarded him as Jewish.
