His first book, De Fyra Främlingarna (The Four Strangers), a collection of short stories, was published in 1924. His other works include Här Här Du Ditt Liv! (Here's Your Life), Strändernas Svall (Return to Ithaca), and Hans Nådes Tid (The Days of His Grace). He shared the Nobel Prize in Literature with Harry Martinson in 1974.
Return to Ithaca is based on Homer's The Odyssey, but differs from the original, in view, in that Johnson has added a psychological dimension where the main characters' thoughts and doubts are depicted, among other things through inner monologues. The story alludes to contemporary times and the experiences of the Second World War.

Not everything is smooth sailing, friendships and love are treated to the limit. This is a blockbuster of a book and a fitting end to this fabulous series.

At the height of the Vietnam War, twenty-seven members of a U.S. special elite team were dropped into North Vietnam to fight alongside the Rands and Montagnards against the communist regime. Their job was to ambush troops along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, one of the most dangerous of the war.
