The example of his famous grandfather and namesake, Sir Richard Grenville† of the Revenge, doubtless helped to point him to a military career.26 In 1618 he volunteered for service in the Netherlands, and graduated from there to the ill-fated regiment sent to protect the Palatinate against Imperial troops.
