Richard U. Sherman. General Richard Updike Sherman was born in Vernon on June 26, 1819, the third child of Willett H. Shearman (the spelling was later changed to Sherman) and Catherine Schoolcraft. He was educated in the Utica Academy where he graduated at age 14.

Richard Updike Sherman was a New York State politician serving in local and U. S. government positions and newspaper publisher/editor. He was also the father of U.S. Vice President James Schoolcraft Sherman.
William Sherman journeyed to Plymouth, Massachusetts, with the Pilgrims in 1630 and Philip Shearman arrived in that colony in 1633, subsequently settling in Rhode Island. A number of his descendants, among them General Richard U. Sherman, have changed the name to Sherman.
