    Richard de Brus was the younger son of Robert de Bruce (born in 1210) and his first wife Isobel, the daughter of Gilbert de Clare.His parents' marriage occurred about 1240 when Isobel was only about 13 years old, and Richard was born about 1250.     Knighthood

    A Sir Richard de Brewys, and a Sir Richard de Bruys, probably the same person, was a witness to documents dated 24 January 1278 and 29 May 1278, and although both spellings could be used for Brus, Richard de Brus is not referred to as a knight in any other documents, nor is there any other indication he was knighted, so it seems likely this is someone else.

    M.E. Cumming Bruce's work Family Records of the Bruces and Cumyns, is unreliable and attaches Richard de Brus to incorrect parents, and claims that he had a wife, Alianore, who survived him, and married, secondly, Richard de Walays, and died 5th Ed. III, and a son Robert. As the inquisitions post mortem, cited above make clear, he was unmarried with no issue and his lands reverted to his father.
