En julio de 1596, una expedición angloholandesa dirigida por el Robert Devereux, II conde de Essex saqueó Cádiz, destruyendo la flota española fondeada en la bahía. Esta armada fue reorganizada y los ingleses no pudieron atacarla por otra tormenta en las costas gallegas.

29 de mar. de 2024 · In 1596 Howard and Robert Devereux, 2nd earl of Essex, commanded the expedition that sacked Cádiz, Spain. The queen made Howard earl of Nottingham in 1597, and in the summer of 1599 he was given the exceptional office of lord lieutenant general of England, which he held until 1619.
