12 de abr. de 2024 · Sir Robert Peel, who was the home secretary, played a key role in the formation of the police. Peel is credited for coming up with the idea of Bentham, Colquhoun, and Fielding, following his advice on the significance of police to the parliament. As a result, Peel spearheaded the earlier development of the police force.
There are fascinating insights into O’Connor’s veneration for Sir Robert Peel, and his claim in 1846 that ‘for five years Peel has led an incipient Chartist Movement’ (pp. 272–3). O’Connor published a fulsome obituary of the former premier in 1850, and Peel was even added to the Chartist portraits issued by the Northern Star .

29 de mar. de 2024 · Peel’s successor as Home Secretary, Lord Melbourne, had formulated plans for a nation-wide police force in 1832, in the wake of the Swing protests and Reform Bill riots. This particular legislation had to be abandoned as a result of parliamentary opposition and led only to the Watching and Lighting Act of 1833.
